Murray Family Farms
Summer Day Camp!

The greatest outdoor experience for kids is taking place near you! It's all happening at the Big Red Barn right outside of Bakersfield. We'll be offering an unforgettable time for one special week this June! Campers will experience a day on a real farm with fresh made meals and fresh picked snacks. They'll learn about farming from the place that it happens, and use our farm as the worlds best classroom while having tons of fun. Kids develop lifelong friendships and learn valuable life lessons during camp, but not all little ones are quite ready for "sleep away camp". Day camps are not only more affordable, but more comfortable for parent and child alike!

Ages 5-14

Did you know....

Day camp can be a child’s first independent experience away from mom and dad.

A child can strengthen emerging skills of making new friends, taking care of their own be¬longings, trying new activities, and taking risks.

A respected, independent research firm, Philliber Research Associates, collected data at 92 randomly selected camps and more than 5,000 families from around the country participated. Parents, campers, and camp staff independently reported growth in areas such as self-confidence, independence, making friends, exploring and learning new activities, and spirituality. Indeed, camp provides growth experiences for youth that can benefit them through adulthood.

Parents love Day camp

"My child gained self-confidence at camp." 70%
"My child remains in contact with friends made at camp." 69%
"My child continues to participate in some of the new activities they learned at camp."

I strongly feel that children need a break from organized learning and the pressures of school, which is why I have always gravitated toward summer camp. Camp gives kids a chance to turn their minds off and just be kids. Every day that my kids come home from camp dirty and sweaty with a lanyard in their hand, I feel that I have given them a priceless gift. By the time school rolls around, they are refreshed and ready to go because they were given the opportunity to have fun all summer long.

Children love Day Camp

"Camp helped me make new friends" 96%

"Camp helped me to get to know kids who are different from me."  93%

If we were lucky enough to go to camp ourselves as children, we know that these things are a precious part of camp life. However, when I visited a camp for a week in Vermont, some forty years since I had last attended one myself, I was struck hard by how rarely I see children engage in these activities anywhere else: not in schools, not in neighborhoods, not in families. It made me wonder if summer camps are one of the last places that kids can learn the so-called “family values” that hard-pressed families no longer have the time to teach.

Campers will learn farm techniques like girdling and sustainable practices. They'll also get the opportunity to meet Mr. and Mrs.Murray during their stay at the farm where they'll learn from the farmers themselves all about what its like to live on and operate a real farm!

Throughout the week, the members of Camp Minimurray will play games and enjoy the farm, of course, but they'll also participate in various other unique experiences. Last year, campers practiced to perform the play "Proud to be a Pluot".  This adorable story telling the origin of the Pluot fruit teaches all about how fruits are made and how farms work, all intertwined with a valuable moral about appreciating our differences.

Most kids never get the opportunity to learn that natural foods can taste good! Camp Murray goers will be treated to a fresh made lunch by the Cal-Okie Kitchen consisting of fresh veggies, fruit, and more! At snack time, Camp Farmhands will guide "Mini-Murrays" through fields to learn how to pick the best berries for thier mid-day snack.
